Stuart joined 20-20 Trustees in October 2020 and currently chairs a Trustee Board for the UK’s largest Housing Association. He has 30 years’ experience in pensions with a unique blend of skills in trustee, corporate, advisory and administration roles and has managed pension schemes ranging in size from £10m to £10bn. Previously Head of Pensions for Wincanton plc, Stuart had responsibility for the executive oversight and strategic leadership of the Company’s defined benefit and defined contribution scheme.
He has created and led trustee service teams and also successfully represented a corporate trustee to over 40 defined benefit schemes, leading consultation and negotiation with employers on scheme funding and corporate-related activities. He has consistently achieved positive outcomes, often in complex and distressed cases, by skilfully balancing competing objectives. His methodical and analytical approach in driving trustee business has helped achieve buy in from key stakeholders.
Successful projects include:
-Positive scheme funding outcomes that have included disciplined asset-liability risk management, enhanced scheme security, flexible apportionment arrangements, company guarantees, debt for equity swaps, asset-backed funding, escrow and letters of credit.
-Management of all pension aspects of corporate-related activities including acquisitions, disposals, restructuring, corporate bond issues and re-financing requirements.
-Enhanced member benefit options including liability management exercises.
-Successful management of advisers to ensure the delivery of value for money services including delegated investment fiduciary management and advisory solutions.
-Detailed interactions and meetings with The Pension Regulator.
-Successful implementation of multiple pension change programmes in highly unionised environments with trade union agreements reached.
Stuart is a very experienced, commercially minded and pragmatic pensions professional and independent trustee who focuses on collaborative and fresh thinking with a view to delivering good outcomes for all parties. He focuses on building trustworthy relationships with sponsors, managing advisers and making pragmatic decisions.
