This year marks 20-20 Trustees 40th birthday. From humble beginnings to almost tripling in size since 2017, we’re meeting the team that help make the magic happen. This week we meet Kerry McDermott.
I’m an Associate Director. The role is very varied day to day. Currently a lot of my work is project focused, buy-in/out and PPF rather than BAU. I see my job as bringing all the different parties and elements together on a project working collaboratively with all advisors. I am also involved in new business pitches, networking, Trustee meetings, sponsor meetings, making discretionary decisions, managing long term strategy and investment decisions, and developing my personal brand in the market.
I wanted to be a Hairdresser. It was when I was growing up. I think I’m quite creative and there was a really cool salon near me where I apprenticed. I got great at sweeping up, ripping tin foil into strips and making drinks!
Can I take your order? My first ever job was as a Waitress in a country pub called the New Napoleon. I wasn’t very good… I spilled gravy on a customer once!
I love Vintage shopping. I get very excited at the treasures to be discovered. Like a 1960’s kaleidoscope, a Biba shirt, or a Turkish carpet. I think of them as an Aladdin’s cave. I blame my dad who used to take me to auctions as a child. I also like house restoration, yoga, literature, art and going to the theatre.
I’ve been to Silverstone a few times. But not to watch Lewis Hamilton though… Ferrari all the way!
I had an infinity pool overlooking the beach. It was part of my 40th celebrations spent at a Spa in Cornwall.
I love Naomi L’Estrange’s leadership. Her understanding, supportiveness, green credentials and support for equal and inclusive working make 20-20 a great place to work.
My motivations at work. That would be seeing a project through and getting members benefits secured as the outcome. My colleagues motivate me, as does helping people!
My three dinner guests. I’d invite Tracey Emin; she’s such a strong woman. I like how she works across media, and her freedom of expression. Jim Morrison, as I like the doors; the way he expressed himself through spoken word and poetry was amazing. And finally Joan Didion, again the way she expresses herself is fantastic (there is a really good documentary about her on Netflix).
I have a black cat. Her name is Miss Shelby Shelby (nothing to do with Peaky Blinders though, she was a rescue cat and came with a great name).
Don’t be afraid to bring your own style to the role. That would be my advice to my younger self. Everyone brings something different to the role and has different ways of working.
